A 56-year-old man was shot to death during a burglary at his east Jefferson County home.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at 5:16 p.m. Thursday to the 1500 block of Charter East Circle to investigate a report of a burglary in progress and a person shot.

Sheriff’s spokesman Henry Irby said they arrived to find the victim wounded.

Center Point Fire and Rescue transported the victim to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Irby said the 22-year-old suspect was taken into custody. Formal charges have not yet been filed.

The victim is the 25th homicide victim countywide so far in 2025.
