Auburn women’s basketball falls to Vanderbilt in overtime behind Mikayla Blakes 55 points

Vanderbilt freshman Mikayla Blakes broke her own NCAA freshman record scoring 55 points in a 98-88 overtime victory against Auburn Sunday afternoon.

Blakes previously set the scoring record after a 53-point performance against Florida on Jan. 30, breaking the Division I record of 52, set by Elena Delle Donne in 2010.

“I had to go out there and prove myself,” Blakes said postgame. I just really had to dig deep and do what needed to be done for us to win today.”

Auburn held a 15-point lead with 6:55 left in the fourth quarter. Yuting Deng scored a career-high 27 points.

“In that fourth quarter, we got tired and started making bad decisions,” Auburn coach Johnnie Harris said. “You could see the fatigue set in. We have to be better. My message to them is to continue to fight. We cannot give up 98 points. That’s what killed us today.”

“Mikayla’s really good at getting her body into you,” Harris said. “She’s a great player. She drew 15 fouls on us.”

Finishing perfect from the free throw line, Blakes sank three to send the game to overtime. Vanderbilt outscored the Tigers 14-4 in the extra period.

Auburn will hit the road for its next game at No. 21 Alabama.
