Authorities identified a man and a woman shot to death in Birmingham Thursday night and announced the arrest of a suspect in their slayings.

Birmingham police on Sunday identified the victims as Teddy Edward Lee Jr., 34, and Brittney Taylor Brewer, 33.

The department’s Crime Reduction Team took the suspect into custody within hours of the double killing.

Demetrius Walton, 43, is charged with capital murder, Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said.

The deadly shooting happened about 7:30 p.m. Thursday in a residential neighborhood in the 4900 block of 41st Street North.

Police were called to the scene after multiple shots were fired in the area.

Wade said East Precinct officers responded to call of shots fired and someone seeing “a victim hanging out of a vehicle.”

Residents heard gunfire and saw at least one of the victims slumped inside of the vehicle and called 911.

When officers arrived, they found Lee and Brewer unresponsive inside of a vehicle that was backed into a driveway. One of the vehicle’s doors was open.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service medics pronounced both dead on the scene at 8:12 p.m.

Walton was arrested in the 4900 block of 43rd Street North. He is being held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail.

“The swift actions of the CRT led to the prompt resolution of this tragic case,’’ Wade said.
