Suspect indicted on manslaughter in fiery Tuscaloosa County wreck that killed retired state trooper
A suspect was indicted earlier this month on manslaughter and other charges in an August wreck that killed a 67-year-old retired state trooper in Tuscaloosa County.
Daaron Crooks, 29, of Tuscaloosa, was intoxicated and driving at speeds over 100 mph when Daryl W. Brown Sr., 63, was killed in the fiery three-vehicle wreck Aug. 8 on I-59, according to the indictment handed down Feb. 5 by a Tuscaloosa County grand jury.
Crooks’ attorney, Lauren Presley, could not immediately be reached for comment on the indictment.
Brown, a Livingston resident, was a retired Alabama state trooper and was a 28-year veteran of the agency, according to Cpl. Reginal King.
Brown’s last assignment was with the Alabama Highway Patrol Division’s Tuscaloosa Post, where he was assigned to Sumter County.
The retired trooper was driving a 2012 Hyundai Accent on the interstate about a mile south of Fosters around 6 a.m. Aug. 8 when his vehicle was struck by Crooks’ 2011 Mazda 6S, causing Brown’s vehicle to be disabled and the Mazda to leave the road and overturn, King said at the time.
Brown’s vehicle was then struck by a 2023 Freightliner tractor-trailer.
The retired trooper was using a seatbelt at the time of the wreck with the tractor-trailer but he was ejected from his vehicle due to the collision, King said.
After striking the Hyundai, the Freightliner caught fire.
Crooks and the driver of the tractor-trailer and the Mazda were taken to DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa with undisclosed injuries.
