Mobile homicide victim was alleged gunman in shooting after 2019 Mardi Gras parade
A victim in a Mobile homicide has been identified and, according to court records, allegedly shot two other minors as a teen in 2019.
Mobile police discovered Tykendrick Barnett dead in an empty parking lot Friday evening on Wiley Street.
The Mobile Police Department is still investigating the circumstances behind Barnett being murdered.
During Mardi Gras in 2019, Barnett, 17 years old at the time, allegedly opened fire along with another gunman at a McDonald’s on Government Street after a Mardi Gras parade.
The shooting resulted in a 7-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy being struck but neither sustained life-threatening injuries.
Barnett was arrested and charged with two counts of assault in the second degree, illegal possession of a firearm and discharging a weapon into an unoccupied vehicle.
Barnett would plead guilty to three counts and was later released from jail in 2022 after time served over two years.
The Semmes Police Department revealed that Barnett had also been the victim in a shooting last month.
A 2023 study found that gunshot victims were likely to be shot again within one to five years. The victims were likely to be from socially underserved communities and were most often Black males.
