Trump wants to get rid of pennies: ‘Let’s rip the waste out’
When he was asked for his two cents’ worth on Super Bowl LIX, President Donald Trump picked the Kansas City Chiefs because quarterback Patrick Mahomes has won three NFL championships — and because Mahomes’ wife, Brittany, is a full-on MAGA member and big fan of Trump.
Well, you can’t win them all.
So, Trump — after bolting the lopsided game at halftime — posted on social media that he’s been thinking about something that doesn’t make sense to him: cents.
“For far too long, the United States has minted pennies, which literally cost us more than two cents,” Trump posted with the Super Bowl still being played on Sunday night. “This is so wasteful! I have instructed my secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies. Let’s rip the waste out of our great nations [sic] budget, even if it’s a penny at a time.”
In the FOX interview before the Philadelphia Eagles whipped the Chiefs, Trump was asked by Fox News host Bret Baier to “size up” the two teams and make his pick. Trump meandered through an answer that hit the obvious highlights before it focused on his love for Mahomes’ wife, Brittany — until he settled on Kansas City for a three-peat.
“I’m a big fan of both teams. They’re sort of different,” Trump said. “In Philadelphia, (they) have one of the greatest running backs, Saquon (Barkley). You know, Saquon had an uncle. Was a great fighter, great fighter — Iran Barkley has name was. You have a great running back. You really have a great quarterback. The other team, the quarterback really knows how to win. He is a great, great quarterback.
Baier responded, “So, game prediction?”
“I hate to do it. I just say that I’ve watched this great quarterback, who has, by the way, a phenomenal wife. OK, she’s a Trump fan. She’s a MAGA fan, so I happen to love her, okay? But she’s a great person. I watched her being interviewed. I said, ‘Boy, that’s pretty good,’ but she’s great and he’s great.
“I guess you have to say that when a quarterback wins as much as this one. I have to go with Kansas City, I have to go with Kansas City. At the same time. Philadelphia has a fantastic … it’s gonna be just a great game.”
Turns out, he was wrong on several accounts: Mahomes was battered by the Eagles, who are romping to victory. And the game was lopsided from the start.
