Mobile police shoot at driver of stolen skid-steer loader during chase, authorities say

Mobile police shot at a driver who tried to hit a person and an officer with a stolen skid-steer loader before striking a patrol vehicle during a chase Thursday morning, a police spokesman said.

Around 10 a.m. Thursday, officers observed the skid-steer — which had been used to try to hit a citizen — near the intersection of Noble Drive and Noble Lane in Tillmans Corner, said spokesman Blake Brown.

Officers tried to initiate a traffic stop when the suspect tried to a hit an officer with the skid-steer and continued to flee from police.

The driver then traveled the wrong way on I-10 westbound before turning back around and exiting the interstate at Exit 15B toward Highway 90, said Brown.

During the chase, a Mobile police unit was intentionally struck by the skid-steer, “causing major damage to the vehicle,” police said.

After a lengthy chase and several attempts by the driver to hit patrol vehicles and officers, officers “engaged the driver with gunfire,” ending the pursuit, police said.

The driver was injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

It was not immediately clear if the driver was struck by gunfire.

Further information on the active investigation was unavailable.
