Calera man charged in hit-and-run that critically injured woman, 77, in Gulf Shores crosswalk

A Calera man is behind bars in south Alabama, accused in a hit-and-run that critically injured a 77-year-old woman.

Gulf Shores officers on patrol responded at 12:44 p.m. Wednesday to a report of a person injured in the 900 block of West Lagoon Avenue, said Det. Carl Wittstruck.

They arrived to find a woman unresponsive in the road. She was airlifted to a hospital.

Due to the extent of the woman’s injuries and the lack of information about her identity, Wittstruck said, investigators from the Traffic Homicide Unit and detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division responded the scene.

Investigators learned the woman was from Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. Authorities said she was in a pedestrian crosswalk when she was struck.

She remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Gustiva Licona-Hernandez, who lives in Calera, was identified by evidence from the scene, Wittstruck said.

He is charged with failure to report an accident with serious injuries. He remains in the Gulf Shores City Jail.
