Pregnant woman fatally shot in Birmingham leaves behind kids, ages 7 and 4; family seeks help

A GoFundMe has been launched for a pregnant Birmingham mother who was killed in shooting that also injured her 7-year-old daughter and another young girl.

Corieonna Shantrice Hines, 24, died in the Tuesday-night gunfire in her apartment near Legion Field. Family said Hines’ daughter was shot up to nine times, and a 13-year-old girl also inside the apartment was injured as well.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said an autopsy showed Hines was also in her first trimester of pregnancy.

“She was a loving mom of two kids, a daughter that’s 7 that’s also battling for her life and a son that’s 4,’’ her sister, LaTionna Wilson wrote in the fundraising campaign. “Unfortunately, my sister did not have life insurance we’re seeking any contributions to help towards funeral arrangements.”

“Keep me and my family in your prayers,’’ Wilson wrote.

Donations to the GoFundMe can be made here.

Authorities are searching for the suspect. His name has not been publicly released but police said he had been in a relationship with Hines in the past.

The shooting happened at 10:20 p.m. Tuesday at a small complex in the 100 block of Ninth Avenue West.

North Precinct officers arrived on the scene and found Hines and the two girls had sustained gunshot wounds.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced Hines dead on the scene. The two injured girls were taken to the hospital.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the girls’ wounds are not believed to be life threatening.

“A male entered the apartment and began firing shots at all three victims,’’ Fitzgerald said. “At this time, we believe the motive in this case is domestic in nature.”

“It just makes you ask the question, ‘What have we come to in our society that a grown man feels the need to walk into an apartment and begin to shoot a woman and two small children,’’ Fitzgerald said.
