‘Strange explosive noise’ plagues Alabama city for 2 weeks, police investigating
An investigation is underway into a distressing “strange explosive noise” heard by Centreville residents for the last two weeks, the city’s mayor said Monday.
“Most of us in the Centreville City limits have heard the strange explosive noise over the past two weeks. We’ve all reported it to law enforcement and they are well aware. However, without knowing exactly where it is, we can’t find out what it is. Be assured that if a person or persons are involved we will know something at some point,” Mayor Mike Oakley posted on the city’s Facebook page.
The mayor told AL.com on Monday night that Police Chief Rodney Smith “is doing a little investigating” into the mysterious noise and that the chief asked city officials to refrain from further comments until the probe is over.
Several residents reported hearing the noises.
Some expressed skepticism that town officials were in the dark about the sound’s origins.
“Last night’s ‘explosive sound’ was a little too close and loud for me at 10 pm. This is ridiculous. As quick as we find out stuff in this town, I can’t hardly believe we don’t know where this is coming from,” one resident said in response to the post.
Another suggested it might be from an ill-fated meth lab.
“Stop lying yall know what’s going on,” said another who shared the initial post.
