North Alabama men’s basketball duo honored by ASUN Conference
After a pair of key victories to shake up the ASUN Conference standings, a pair of North Alabama men’s basketball players picked up some weekly honors.
Jacari Lane was named the conference’s player of the week, while Daniel Ortiz earned newcomer of the week after the Lions’ victories over Lipscomb and Austin Peay to move into a tie for second in the conference standings.
The award marks the fourth this season for Lane, a graduate of Lee High School in Huntsville; Ortiz, who transferred back to North Alabama this offseason after a year at UAB, earned his first weekly honors.
Lane shined in North Alabama’s 74-64 win over Lipscomb on Thursday, scoring 18 points and going 6-for-12 from the field. The Huntsville native also dished out six assists and grabbed four rebounds in the victory.
In the Lions’ 88-84 overtime victory over Austin Peay, he piled on 22 points to go along with six rebounds and five blocks.
Lane currently has 1,232 career points at North Alabama and ranks 11th on the all-time scoring list, according to UNA Athletics; 6 points would move him past Ricky Johnson, a UNA Hall of Famer and native of Florence.
Ortiz, a native of New Orleans, finished with 12 points and three steals in the Lions’ victory over Lipscomb, hitting four 3-point baskets in the win.
He went on to score a season-high 28 points in an overtime win over Austin Peay, knocking down five 3-point baskets and grabbing four rebounds; he also went 7-for-7 from the free-throw line in the win.
North Alabama (14-7, 6-2 ASUN Conference) will travel to Charlotte, N.C., on Wednesday to face Queens.
