Mother’s boyfriend charged when 1-year-old girl dies of head trauma at Birmingham hospital

A 1-year-old Tuscaloosa girl died over the weekend at a Birmingham hospital and her mother’s boyfriend has now been charged in her death.

Devonte Crumel, 30, was initially charged with aggravated child abuse.

The girl was taken unresponsive to DCH Regional Medical Center on Thursday. She showed signs of head or brain injury and airlifted to Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham, said Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Jack Kennedy.

Medical specialists there notified investigators that the injuries were the result of physical abuse. He was booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail on Friday.

Authorities were notified Sunday that the girl had died.

Crumel is now charged with murder, Kennedy said.

Charging documents against Crumel state that the girl’s 25-year-old mother left her daughter in Crumel’s care while she went to a doctor’s appointment.

Crumel notified the mother – his girlfriend – via cell phone and Facetime that the child was unresponsive.

The mother rushed home and then drove her daughter to DCH.

Investigators, in the deposition, said Crumel told them the child was crying and he became frustrated and attempted to console her. After being frustrated, he said, he went to the bathroom smoke marijuana and returned to find the child unresponsive on the living room floor.

Doctors said the child had severe brain bleeding and an abrasion on her head consistent with contact with a carpeted surface. Her face and head were swollen, the report said, and she had bleeding behind her eyes.

The documents noted that the child became unresponsive within 30 minutes to one hour after sustaining the injuries.

Crumel is being held without bond pending an Aniah’s Law hearing.
