A 55-year-old Birmingham City Jail inmate was found dead in his cell earlier this week.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office Wednesday identified the inmate as Sonny Charles Leppala. He lived in Birmingham.

Leppala was found unresponsive in his private cell at 1:29 a.m. Monday. He was pronounced dead at the jail at 2:19 a.m.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said jail staff made the discovery during a routine wellness check.

An autopsy found not show signs of trauma or foul play, Yates said. Additional laboratory studies are underway.

Authorities did not disclose Leppala’s charges or how long he had been in the city jail.

Birmingham police are investigating.
