Man once accused in 2016 killing of Hoover veteran charged in rash of Calera car break-ins
A 25-year-old man once accused in the high-profile 2016 shooting death of Hoover veteran Mike Gilotti is back in jail.
Darrian Bryant was 16 when he and three others were charged in the slaying of Gilotti, who was killed outside his Lake Cyrus home.
Gilotti was heading to the gym for a morning workout when police say he encountered the teens breaking into his car.
The murder charge against Bryant was dismissed after two of his co-defendants – Charleston Wells and Ahmad Johnson – were acquitted. Wells was later sentenced to 20 years in prison for an unrelated rape.
Bryant, however, did plead guilty to nine counts of unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle.
Bryant was arrested in Calera on Friday after a rash of vehicle burglaries in the Waterford and Kensington subdivisions.
Calera Police Chief David Hyche said detectives shared information with neighboring agencies and a Hoover police officer located the suspect vehicle and took Bryant into custody.
He remains in the Shelby County Jail on charges of unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle and theft of property, jail records show. His bond is set at $20,000.
Hyche, in a Facebook post, said the suspect will face charges related to vehicle burglaries in both Jefferson and Shelby counties. He said additional charges are also likely in Calera.
“Crime like this happens everywhere but we want to make it as unpleasant as possible for criminals when they victimize Calera citizens,” Hyche said.
“Us sharing information with our citizens when crime occurs might give the impression that we have more crime but I believe that being transparent gives our citizens the confidence to come forward and provide information.”

Gilotti was shot to death about 4:55 a.m. Jan. 5, 2016, just outside his home in the 5500 block of Park Side Circle.
His wife, Heather Gilotti, heard two gunshots and then heard a vehicle “with a large engine” pulling away from the scene. Gilotti collapsed on his doorstep. He was later pronounced dead on the scene.
Gilotti’s slaying came after a string of car break-ins across St. Clair, Jefferson, Shelby, and Tuscaloosa counties, police said. According to prosecutors, the four teens were members of a Bessemer-area street gang called “M-Tre,” which stood for “Money Making Mafia.”
Mike Gilotti, a father, husband and Iraq veteran, was shot to death outside his Hoover home in January 2016.
At both trials, Bryant said the four teens were in Hoover’s Lake Cyrus community breaking into cars in that morning.
When the group got into their vehicle– which was stolen from another neighborhood– they saw Gilotti walking out of his home. Gilotti, a 33-year-old father of two and Army veteran, was headed to the YMCA for a workout.
Bryant testified that once the group saw Gilotti, Wells and Johnson exited the car and approached the man to ask for directions.
After Gilotti pointed the teens back to the main road, Bryant said Wells “upped his gun” and fatally shot Gilotti in the back while Johnson stood nearby with another firearm.
Bryant claimed that he and another person charged were inside of a vehicle when Gilotti was shot in front of his Lake Cyrus home.
Wells testified at his own trial and placed the blame on Johnson and Bryant. The fourth suspect was not prosecuted.
Bessemer Cutoff Circuit Judge David Carpenter Under Bryant’s plea to the unlawful breaking and entering cases, he received a 46-month suspended sentence with three years of supervised probation and received a felony conviction.
Carpenter later revoked that probation after Bryant was arrested on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
