Martin Luther King Jr. holiday 2025: What’s open, what’s closed; Will mail run today?
Monday, Jan. 20 is set aside to mark the birthday of slain civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
MLK Day 2025 coincides with the inauguration of President Donald Trump, who will be sworn in for a second term of office in ceremonies held in Washington, D.C.
Born on Jan. 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, King was a Baptist minister and key figure in efforts for civil rights in the U.S. until his assassination in 1968. Martin Luther King Day became a federal holiday in 1986 though it took until 2000 before it was recognized in every state. His birthday is marked on the third Monday in January each year.
Here’s a look at what’s open and what’s closed on MLK Day 2024:
- Federal offices – Closed
- State offices – Closed
- County and municipal offices – Most closed, check ahead
- Schools – Closed
- Post office – Closed. No mail will be delivered on Jan. 20th. Post offices will be closed.
- Financial markets – The NYSE and Nasdaq are closed
- Banks – Closed
- Walmart – Open
- Target – Open
- National parks -Open with free admission on MLK Day.
- UPS and FedEx – UPS will have limited services including Express Critical shipping. FedEx will be open though Express and Ground Economy will be operating on a modified service.
