Blockbuster musical coming to Alabama for 3 weeks on national tour

Get ready to cackle with glee, “Wicked” fans in Alabama. The blockbuster musical is coming to Birmingham for a three-week stint in 2025, courtesy of the Broadway in Birmingham series.

This isn’t the hit movie version of “Wicked,” still playing in cinemas throughout the state and recently available for streaming. It’s a national tour of the acclaimed theater production, which won three Tony Awards in 2004 and continues as long-running classic in New York City.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo won’t be on stage in Birmingham, of course, but theatergoers will get to hear “Defying Gravity,” “Popular,” “The Wizard and I,” “For Good” and other songs from the musical performed live.

“Wicked” tops the list of six shows on the agenda for the 2025-2026 Broadway in Birmingham season, which includes the national tours of “Kimberly Akimbo” and “MJ: The Musical,” both multiple Tony winners, and more.

All shows will be presented by the American Theatre Guild at the BJCC Concert Hall, which is part of the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex downtown. The concert hall, which seats about 3,000 people, is off 11th Avenue North, between 19th and 22nd streets North.

Wicked (Sept. 3-21, 2025)

“Wicked,” a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, made its Broadway debut in 2003. The show is an adaptation of Gregory Maguire‘s 1995 novel, “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.” The show became a phenomenon on Broadway, drawing audiences from around the country and winning Tonys and Drama Desk awards. The original cast album also earned a Grammy Award.

Here’s the plot for “Wicked,” as described by Playbill: “Long before Dorothy arrives in Oz, there is another young woman born with emerald-green skin — smart, fiery, misunderstood and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships … until the world decides to call one ‘good,’ and the other one ‘wicked.’

This isn’t the first time “Wicked” has come to Birmingham on a national tour. The musical made its debut here in 2009, and returned in 2012 and 2016. The show is “big, brash, loud, busy, colorful … and wonderful,” Alec Harvey said in his 2009 review for AL.com. “That it teaches a couple of life lessons along the way is just a bonus.”

Clue (Nov. 11-16, 2025)

This comedy/mystery play is based on a 1985 movie written by Jonathan Lynn and inspired by the Clue board game. Book for the show is by Sandy Rustin, who also wrote “The Cottage” and a stage version of “Mystic Pizza.”

“Murder and blackmail are on the menu when six mysterious guests assemble at Boddy Manor for a night they’ll never forget,” the “Clue” website says. “Was it Mrs. Peacock in the study with the knife? Or was it Colonel Mustard in the library with the wrench? Based on the fan-favorite 1985 Paramount Pictures movie and inspired by the classic Hasbro board game, ‘Clue’ is the ultimate whodunit.”

Kimberly Akimbo (Nov. 25-30, 2025)

“Kimberly Akimbo” made its Broadway debut in 2022, with music by Jeanine Tesori, and lyrics and book by David Lindsay-Abaire. It won five Tony Awards in 2023, including Best Musical. The show, based on a 2001 comedy play by Lindsay-Abaire, ended its Broadway run in April 2024 and launched a national tour.

“Kim is a bright and funny Jersey teen, who happens to look like a 72-year-old lady,” a Playbill synopsis says. “And yet her aging condition may be the least of her problems. Forced to maneuver family secrets, borderline personalities and possible felony charges, Kim is determined to find happiness in a world where not even time is on her side.”

The New York Times praised the musical, calling it “a quirky show that combined pathos and comedy,” but said it was “often overshadowed in a contemporary Broadway dominated by established titles, jukebox scores and celebrity performers.”

“The show recreates some of Jackson’s career milestones, at least until 1992: rehearsing with the Jackson 5 in their home, meeting Berry Gordy (who signs them to Motown), collaborating with Quincy Jones on ‘Off the Wall’ and ‘Thriller,’ being handed Grammy after Grammy, reuniting with his brothers for the semi-botched Victory reunion tour,” Rolling Stone said in a 2022 review. “The narrative is a collection of Jackson’s greatest character-shaping hits.”

It had a short run on Broadway in 2021-2022, interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. A national tour launched in 2033.

“Daniel Hillard, a struggling, out-of-work actor, will do anything for his kids,” the show’s website says. “After losing custody in a messy divorce, he creates the kindly alter ego of Scottish nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire in a desperate attempt to stay in their lives. As his new character takes on a life of its own, Mrs. Doubtfire teaches Daniel more than he bargained for about how to be a father.”
