New York Jets sign former Auburn kicker again

The New York Jets used five kickers in the 2024 season – Greg Zuerlein in eight games, Anders Carlson in five and Greg Joseph, Riley Patterson and Spencer Shrader in one apiece.

Zuerlein did all his kicking in the first eight games of the season before going on injured reserve. He returned for the Week 17 game, did not play in it and returned to injured reserve for the final week of the season.

Zuerlein has one season remaining on a two-year, $8.4 million contract.

Carlson also will be back with the Jets in 2025 after New York signed the former Auburn kicker to a reserve/future contract on Tuesday.

A player signed to a reserve/future contract can be added to an NFL team’s roster when it expands from 53 to 90 players for the offseason on March 12, the first day of the NFL’s 2025 business year. The newly signed players become eligible to participate in offseason workouts, minicamps and OTAs as team members. Only players who aren’t on NFL active rosters can sign reserve/future contracts.

Carlson kicked in the 11th through 15th games of the season for the Jets before being waived when Zuerlein made his brief return.

Zuerlein made 9-of-15 field-goal attempts and 13-of-14 extra-point tries in 2024. He was 0-of-1 on attempts of 50 or more yards.

Carlson made 8-of-10 field-goal attempts and 9-of-11 extra-point tries for the Jets. Carlson had the only field goal for New York of at least 50 yards in 2024 when he made a 58-yarder in a 28-27 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 17.

Carlson also kicked in two games as an injury replacement for the San Francisco 49ers in 2024. He made 5-of-5 field-goal attempts, including connecting from 50 and 55 yards, and 3-of-4 field-goal tries with the 49ers in his second NFL season.

Two other Auburn alumni and a former Alabama player also signed reserve/future contracts on Tuesday. Each had finished the season on the practice squad of the team he signed with.

Safety Marcus Banks (Alabama) signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. An undrafted rookie, Banks spent the season on the Bucs’ practice squad without appearing in a regular-season game.

Outside linebacker Eku Leota (Auburn) signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Leota started his second NFL season with the Carolina Panthers and played in the first two games, made one start and recorded his first NFL sack before being released. He landed with the Pittsburgh practice squad and played in one more game as a practice-squad elevation.

Running back D.J. Williams (Auburn) signed with the Buccaneers. An undrafted rookie, Williams spent the season on the Tampa Bay practice squad. He played as a practice-squad elevation in a 51-27 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 13, when he returned two kickoffs for 54 yards.
