Search continues for missing Alabama grandmother: Man she allegedly went to buy drugs with still jailed
The search for a missing Alabama mother and grandmother continued by land and air Tuesday along the Interstate 22 corridor.
Chastity Ann Terry, 39, was last seen just after 2 a.m. Friday at the Love’s Truck Stop in Jasper.
Hamilton police, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and ALEA’s aviation unit were among the team searching the I-22 area again on Tuesday.
Hamilton Police Chief Jordan Carter said Terry and 49-year-old Charles Williams Jr. were seen getting into an orange Jeep together.
“We can confirm they walked out of the store together and we believe they then entered the orange jeep,’’ Carter said.
The pair traveled I-22 west back toward Hamilton where, for some reason, they got off the interstate at Exit 22 and the jeep ended up in the ditch on the westbound ramp.
“At that time,” the chief said, “snow and ice had started coming in.”
Carter said witnesses reported seeing Williams get out of the vehicle. He told investigators Terry also exited the vehicle and was last seen on foot.
“That’s why we’re focusing resources to that area,’’ Carter said. “He said they were in this area together. We don’t have any evidence of that, but we’re having to deal with statements and people talking.”
The chief said there’s no reason or evidence at this point to believe Terry is injured or worse.
“Our hope is that she’s safe and well in a location,’’ he said.
Sheriff Kevin Williams told reporters that Terry and Williams went to the Birmingham area to buy drugs.
“Fentanyl, I believe it is,’’ the sheriff said. “So I believe she was under the influence of something. That’s the information that we did have. That’s why they were traveling at that moment and coming back.”
Carter said he could not confirm those statements.
“I spoke with some of the family members, and I told them that as law enforcement we plan for the worst and hope for the best,’’ Carter said. “We want to plan as if, in fact, a serious crime has been committed but the reality of it is, we have no evidence or facts to support that an actual crime has been committed.”
Williams remains in the Marion County Jail. He is charged with conspiracy to commit a controlled substance crime.
A prayer vigil for Terry was held Monday night at Christ Community Fellowship Church in Hamilton.
“Our officers our dedicated to finding Ms. Terry,’’ Carter said. “I’ve got officers volunteering to come in and work overtime, officers that are worried about her. Our department is worried about her, and I know the sheriff’s office is working hard also.”
“We’ve got a team of officers that are highly dedicated to protection and service,’’ the chief said, “and we’re going to do everything in our power to find her.”
Terry is 5-feet, 6-inches tall and weighs 160 pounds. She has blonde hair and hazel eyes. She was wearing a gray hoodie, black pants, brown and white shoes.
