Iconic Alabama musician releasing first acoustic album: Hear a song

For his ninth proper studio album, Jason Isbell is doing something different. The six-time Grammy winner will release his first ever solo acoustic album, “Foxes In The Snow,” March 7.

Isbell, a folk/rock singer, songwriter and guitarist and Alabama native, has released the song “Bury Me” as an advance single from the album. The 45-year-old Isbell is known for his stirring lyrics, nimble guitar-playing and strong singing. A stripped down recording, as heard on “Bury Me,” makes those talents even more vivid.

“Foxes In The Snow” is the first album credited solely to “Jason Isbell” and not “Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit” in 10 years. The last solo effort being 2015′s “Something More Than Free.” Fans can preorder/pre-save “Foxes In The Snow” at orcd.co/ji-fits.

Other song titles on the 11-track album: “Ride to Robert’s,” “Eileen,” “Gravelweed,” “Don’t Be Tough,” “Open and Close,” “Foxes in the Snow,” “Crimson and Clay,” “Good While It Lasted,” “True Believer,” and “Wind Behind the Rain.”

The album cover art is by Isbell’s girlfriend, 30-year-old painter Anna Weyant. Isbell and musician Amanda Shires, his second wife, divorced in 2024.

He’s had plenty of other life experiences to draw from since his previous album, 2023′s Grammy-winning “Weathervanes.” Isbell, who grew up in Green Hill and Muscle Shoals, performed his song“Something More Than Free” at the 2024 Democratic National Convention. In fall 2023, Isbell made his first notable appearance in a film, in director Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” adaptation.

A longtime Nashville resident, Isbell will embark on a solo acoustic tour Feb. 2 in Berlin. He’ll reunite with longtime backing band The 400 Unit for a home-state show June 28 at Birmingham’s new Coca-Cola Amphitheater.
