Former South Alabama running back staying in Sun Belt Conference

Former South Alabama running back Braylon McReynolds is transferring to Louisiana-Monroe, he announced Monday.

McReynolds, a Mobile native who starred at McGill-Toolen Catholic School, will be reunited with his high school coach in Monroe. Earnest Hill is entering his second season as Warhawks’ defensive coordinator.

McReynolds played in 25 games in three seasons at South Alabama, totaling all-purpose 1,604 yards and two touchdowns as a rusher, receiver and return specialist. He took a redshirt year after missing most of 2023 with a broken collarbone, so he has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

McReynolds was an all-state pick as a senior at McGill-Toolen in 2021. He never became an every-down player at the college level, however, and worked as South Alabama’s third running back behind Kentrel Bullock and Fluff Bothwell — who has since transferred to Mississippi State — this season.

McReynolds is among seven South Alabama scholarship players who have departed via the transfer portal since the end of the 2024 regular season. In addition to McReynolds and Bothwell, others who have announced their destinations are cornerback Amarion Fortenberry (Kansas State), safety Rickey Hyatt (Ohio), kicker Laith Marjan (Kansas) and safety Jordan Scruggs (West Virginia).

Defensive end Jordan Norman also left the Jaguars via the transfer portal, but has not yet announced his next school. Defensive back Brian Dillard initially entered the portal, but has since withdrawn and will play the 2025 season at South Alabama.

ULM went 5-7 in 2024 under first-year coach Bryant Vincent, a former South Alabama offensive coordinator. The Warhawks had the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year in running back Ahmad Hardy, who transferred to Missouri after the season.
