Teen accused of cutting another teen’s throat in bleachers at south Alabama high school basketball game
An 18-year-old has been charged with attempted murder after the stabbing of a 16-year-old at a basketball game Friday night in Jackson.
Drayton Kelley is alleged to have committed the attack during a Jackson Academy girl’s basketball game.
According to court documents, Kelley allegedly cut the throat of the victim while sitting in the bleachers.
The weapon was described as a “blue-handled skinning knife.”
Kelly was immediately arrested at the game.
Jackson police stated that the victim was in stable condition and are still investigating a motive, according to WKRG News 5.
The school posted a media statement on Facebook asking for prayers.
“Jackson Academy is working closely with law enforcement officials to ensure that all aspects of the incident are thoroughly examined and that appropriate actions are taken,” the school said.
“Our priority is to support the investigation in any way possible and to provide all necessary information to the authorities. The safety and well-being of our students, faculty and staff, as well as that of the public, are of the utmost importance to us. Counselors and pastors will be on our campus for students affected by the incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this incident. The administration and board request your prayers as we navigate through this difficult time.”
Efforts by AL.com to reach the Jackson Police Department for additional information were not immediately successful.
