NFL playoffs: Derrick Henry stiff-arms former Tide teammate while running Ravens to victory

Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry closed the regular season with three consecutive 100-yard rushing games as he totaled 447 yards and three touchdowns on 71 carries.

Henry opened the postseason on Saturday night with an even bigger game than any of those three. He ran for 186 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries in Baltimore’s 28-14 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in an AFC first-round game.

And Henry did what he had to do to run the Ravens into the second round, including stiff-arming Steelers safety and former Alabama teammate Minkah Fitzpatrick into the turf on a 34-yard run to the Pittsburgh 12-yard line to set up Baltimore’s first touchdown.

“Bama boy,” Henry said during a postgame interview with Prime Video. “… You know it’s all love. On the field, it’s business.”

Henry tied Terrell Davis’ NFL record with his fourth playoff game with at least 150 rushing yards. No other player has more than two such games.

Henry recorded the 15th NFL playoff game with at least 186 rushing yards. He is the only player on the list twice. Exactly five years before Saturday night’s game, Henry ran for 195 yards on 30 carries in the Tennessee Titans’ 28-12 victory over the Ravens.

Henry broke the team record for rushing yards in a playoff game. Ray Rice had set the franchise record with 159 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries in a 33-14 victory over the New England Patriots on Jan. 10, 2010.

In the second quarter, Henry had seven carries for 42 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown run, as the Ravens drove 85 yards on 13 plays – all on the ground – to take a 14-0 lead with 4:09 left in the first half.

Henry had 100 rushing yards in the first half. Baltimore had a 21-0 lead at that point, had outgained Pittsburgh in yardage 308-59 and had piled up 19 first downs to the Steelers’ two.

After Pittsburgh scored on its first second-half possession, Henry restored the Ravens’ three-TD lead with a 44-yard run to the end zone.

Baltimore ran for 299 yards and Pittsburgh ran for 29 yards on Saturday night as the Ravens won their fifth game in a row and the Steelers lost their fifth game in a row.

Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson completed 16-of-21 passes for 175 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and ran for 81 yards on 15 carries.

Pittsburgh quarterback Russell Wilson completed 20-of-29 passes for 270 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

In addition to Henry, eight other players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during the Pittsburgh-Baltimore game:

Steelers nose tackle Montravius Adams (Auburn) made one tackle.

Ravens cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis (St. Paul’s Episcopal, Alabama) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

George Pickens (Hoover) started at wide receiver for the Steelers. Pickens had five receptions for 87 yards and one touchdown. Pickens caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Wilson for the game’s final touchdown with 3:24 left in the third quarter.

Ravens nose tackle Michael Pierce (Daphne, Samford) recorded one sack. He had two sacks during the regular season.

Steelers punter Corliss Waitman (South Alabama) averaged 51.4 yards on five punts with a 50.6-yard net. Waitman had a 54-yard punt that was muffed and returned 4 yards to the Baltimore 5-yard line, a 47-yard punt downed at the Baltimore 15, a 56-yard punt downed at the Baltimore 15, a 47-yard punt to a fair catch at the Baltimore 10 and a 47-yard punt to a fair catch at the Baltimore 17.

Steelers wide receiver Quez Watkins (Athens) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Baltimore entered the postseason after a 12-5 regular season. The Ravens’ opponent in the Divisional Round won’t be determined until after Sunday’s remaining AFC first-round game between the Denver Broncos and Buffalo Bills.

Pittsburgh had a 10-7 regular-season record.
