South Alabama hires running backs coach, cornerbacks coach off Power 4 staffs
South Alabama has added Jason Washington as cornerbacks coach and co-defensive coordinator and Jayden Everett as running backs coach, a source confirmed to AL.com.
Washington comes to South Alabama from Mississippi State, where he spent five seasons in various roles including safeties coach (2020-21), running backs coach (2022) and director of player development/NFL liaison (2023-24). He was previously cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas (2017-19), and cornerbacks coach and special teams coordinator at Houston (2015-16) and has also worked at Texas State and Rice.
Washington was on the same Houston staff as South Alabama head coach Major Applewhite, who was offensive coordinator at the time and later became head coach. He replaces Jay Hopson, who stepped down earlier this week after two seasons.
A San Antonio native, Washington played both football and baseball at Texas State in the early 2000s. He was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Honor in 2024.

Everett spent the 2024 season as an offensive assistant/analyst at Michigan. He was previously running backs coach at Vanderbilt (2023), Tulsa (2021-22), Akron (2019-20) and Central Michigan (2017-18).
A Kansas native, Everett played at Indiana State and also coached at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College. He replaces Effrem Reed, who left the Jaguars after one season to follow Ezell to Wake Forest.
With Applewhite assuming quarterback coaching duties, South Alabama still has one more opening for an on-field assistant coach. It is possible that position will be designated as a general offensive assistant/analyst, with additional recruiting duties.
