1 All-Pro selector prefers Derrick Henry to Saquon Barkley as the NFL’s top running back of 2024
Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley became the ninth player to record 2,000 rushing yards in a single season in 2024. Barkley piled up 2,005 yards and 13 touchdowns on 345 rushing attempts before sitting out the final game of the regular season in preparation for the playoffs.
Among the other eight players with 2,000 rushing yards in a season is the runner-up to Barkley for this season’s Jim Brown Award, which goes annually to the NFL’s rushing leader.
Derrick Henry ran for 1,921 yards and 16 touchdowns on 325 carries for the Baltimore Ravens in 2024 as the former Alabama All-American became the only player in NFL history with at least two seasons of more than 1,900 rushing yards.
Despite the rarity of Henry’s accomplishment, all-star accolades have been reserved largely for Barkley and his breaking of the 2,000-yard barrier.
The current week between the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs marks the all-star season, and the NFL Players Association on Wednesday and The Associated Press on Friday named Barkley as the running back on their All-Pro teams for 2024.
Even the NFL’s Next Gen Stats picks an All-Pro team based its analytics and metrics from the season. Barkley earned the 2024 running-back honor from Next Gen Stats, which cited his 1,245 second-half rushing yards, 46 runs of 10 or more yards and league-high 11 runs reaching at least 20 mph.
But Pro Football Focus, an analytics company that grades every player on every play, differed from the other all-star selectors. PFF’s first-team running back was Henry, with Barkley as the second-team pick.
Aside from having PFF’s highest rushing grade among the league’s running backs for 2024, Henry came out on top because he rang up an “astonishing” 1,137 rushing yards after contact and forced a league-high 80 missed tackles.
Henry and Barkley will be in action this weekend in first-round games of the NFL playoffs.
Henry and the Ravens play the Pittsburgh Steelers at 7 p.m. CST Saturday at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. Prime Video will televise the AFC game.
Barkley and the Eagles play the Green Bay Packers at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. FOX will televise the NFC game.
