Snow over for Alabama? Winter weather may still pose problems: What to expect this weekend

The National Weather Service warned on Friday evening that a winter mix could still cause dangerous road conditions and an increased risk for power outages for parts of north Alabama.

The weather service continued to stress that driving would be hazardous for north and central Alabama, especially as temperatures drop overnight and any leftover moisture on roadways freezes.

Winter storm warnings will remain in effect through tonight for parts of central Alabama. North Alabama will be under a winter storm warning until Saturday morning.

  • A winter storm warning will be in effect until 9 p.m. Friday for the central Alabama counties of Shelby, Talladega, Clay and Randolph. The weather service said an additional glaze of ice will be possible through the evening.
  • A winter storm warning has been extended until midnight tonight for the central Alabama counties of Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, Etowah, Fayette, Jefferson, Lamar, Marion, St. Clair, Walker and Winston. A light glaze of ice will be possible in those areas along with slick roads and sidewalks.
  • North Alabama counties will be under a winter storm warning until 6 a.m. Saturday. Those counties are Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Morgan, Marshall, Jackson, DeKalb and Cullman. The weather service said a light mix of freezing rain, freezing drizzle or snow should end later this evening in far northeast Alabama. Forecasters said “slushy road conditions may become icy in spots later tonight as temperatures drop below freezing.”

The weather service expects temperatures in north and north-central Alabama to fall below freezing overnight.

That could lead to potential black ice on roadways (see tonight’s expected low temperatures at the top of this post).
