What’s open, what’s closed today? What to know about national day of mourning for Jimmy Carter
Today (Jan. 9, 2025) is a National Day of Mourning for President Jimmy Carter who died Dec. 29, 2024 at age 100.
President Joe Biden declared the National Day of Mourning to honor Carter, the 39th U.S. president, to coincide with the official state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral. All flags will be flown at half-staff for the 30 days after Carter’s death.
The last national day of mourning was observed in December 2018 for the late former President George H.W. Bush who died at 94.
What’s closed?
Federal offices and agencies will be closed Thursday. The U.S. Post Office will also be closed and mail will not run. The U.S. Supreme Court building will also be closed.
Federal employees at the arsenal, except those deemed essential for national security, will not work Thursday.
Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange will be closed.
What’s open?
State and municipal offices will be open. Because it is not a federal holiday, banks will remain open. UPS and FedEx also said they will remain open with regular delivery services.
National parks and visitor centers will be open but administrative offices will be closed.
Schedules at military bases will vary. In Alabama, Huntsville’s Redstone Arsenal announced gates will operate on holiday hours. Gate 8 at the intersection of Drake Ave. and Patton Road will be open from 5:30 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Gate 9 on Rideout Road will be on its regular 24/7 schedule. All other gates will be closed.
IRS change
The IRS has also made some changes to its schedule due to the Carter remembrance.
Taxpayers will have an extra day, until Friday, Jan. 10, to file any return or pay any tax originally due on Thursday, Jan. 9.
The one-day extension applies to any return required to be filed on Jan. 9. It also applies to any required federal tax payment originally due on that day, as well as any federal income, payroll or excise tax deposit due on Jan. 9.
