Jacksonville State lands commitment from 6-foot-8 receiver out of Rutgers

Jacksonville State’s group of wide receivers added some size on Monday.

Former Rutgers wide receiver Deondre Johnson announced his commitment to Jax State on Monday, becoming Charles Kelly’s first wide receiver commit out of the transfer portal.

Johnson, a 6-foot-8, 211-pound wide receiver, entered the transfer portal on Dec. 28 after playing his sophomore season with the Scarlet Knights.

He saw action in one game for Rutgers, in its 2023 game against Wagner.

The move reunites him with quarterback Gavin Wimsatt, who played at Rutgers in 2023 and committed to Jax State on Sunday; during Rutgers’ 2024 spring game, Johnson caught three passes for 40 yards.

Johnson prepped at Newburgh Free Academy in Newburgh, New York, hauling in 27 catches for 629 yards and eight touchdowns while running for 161 yards and three touchdowns as a senior. On defense, he added 20 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup.

He was a 3-star prospect out of high school and was rated as the No. 4 high school player in the state of New York.
