Isolated severe storms possible tonight in Alabama
A strong cold front is on its way to Alabama, and it could bring a few stronger storms with it later tonight.
It’s also going to be very windy, and wind advisories have been issued for much of the state starting this afternoon. Gusts could be as high as 45 mph at times (which is tropical storm force).
The wind advisories will go into effect at 3 p.m. Sunday and will last through the day on Monday.
The areas in brown will be under wind advisories today:
Then there will be a chance for a few storms later tonight.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has the western half of Alabama in a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather tonight.
A Level 1 risk means that isolated severe storms will be possible.
An isolated tornado, damaging winds and heavy rain could be possible.
The better setup for strong storms will likely be west of Alabama today, and parts of Mississippi have a Level 3 weather risk. However, the storms likely won’t make it here until later tonight and could be on a weakening trend, according to forecasters.
A blast of very cold air will follow the cold front, plunging the state into the icebox for a few days. North Alabama could see some snow flurries or even snow showers on Monday, and there will be a chance for more winter precipitation in Alabama on Friday, though the details are more uncertain. As today’s potential for storms, the weather service said rain will be possible off and on today. The potential for stronger storms will arrive later this evening.
