Vasquez scores season-high 27 as UAB dominates Tulsa in 83-51 victory

The UAB Blazers were looking to notch their first league victory of the season on Saturday hosting the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

An added bonus for UAB would be going over .500 with a victory. The Blazers got a two-for-one deal on Saturday afternoon.

UAB blasted Tulsa, 83-51 at Bartow Arena in a game where they led by as many as 35 points in the second half.

UAB improved to an 8-7 record on the season and earned their first conference win of 2024-25.

Senior guard Alejandro Vasquez had his best performance of the season, hitting four of his five three-point attempts on the way to a season-high 27-point performance on offense off the bench.

Forward Christian Coleman notched his fourth double-double of the season, scoring 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. His frontcourt partner Yaxel Lendeborg was held under double-digits in scoring for only the third time this year, scoring nine points, but grabbed 11 rebounds, blocked four shots and recorded four assists as he continues to flash an impressive playmaking ability at 6-foot-9.

Head coach Andy Kennedy has continuously preached his desire to see more physicality and energy from this season’s team, as lacking in both areas led to improbable halftime losses, most recently in just their last game against North Texas.

UAB held a lead of 23 at halftime and never led by less than 20 in the second half as they out-shot the Golden Hurricanes from two and three-point range, out-rebounded them 43-35 and had 19 team assists to Tulsa’s nine.

The Blazers’ next contest is on Tuesday night at Bartow Arena as they take on 7-7 Tulane at 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
