Tennessee Titans’ Calvin Ridley 59 yards from an NFL oddity

Wide receiver Calvin Ridley needed 90 receiving yards in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ final game to reach 1,000 for the 2023 NFL season. The former Alabama standout got there with six receptions for 106 yards and one touchdown in a 28-20 loss to the Tennessee Titans.

After signing a four-year, $92 million contract in March to join Tennessee as an NFL free agent, Ridley needs 59 receiving yards in the Titans’ final game to reach 1,000 for the 2024 season.

“I just want to play some good, fun football,” Ridley said about Tennessee’s game against the Houston Texans on Sunday. “It’s the last game of the year. Just win or do whatever we got to do. But I want to get these 59 yards or whatever they are. I’m going to get them.”

In NFL history, 351 players have recorded 950 1,000-yard receiving seasons, starting with former Alabama All-American Don Hutson for the Green Bay Packers in 1942.

If Ridley gets 59 receiving yards on Sunday, he will become the ninth player to record 1,000 with at least three NFL franchises. Ridley had 90 receptions for 1,374 yards and nine touchdowns for the Atlanta Falcons in 2020 and 76 receptions for 1,016 yards and eight touchdowns for the Jaguars in 2023.

The players who have recorded 1,000-yard receiving seasons with at least three NFL franchises are:

  • Brandin Cooks: New Orleans Saints 2015, 2016; New England Patriots 2017; Los Angeles Rams 2018; Houston Texans 2020, 2021
  • Amari Cooper: Oakland Raiders 2015, 2016; Oakland Raiders/Dallas Cowboys 2018; Dallas Cowboys 2019, 2020; Cleveland Browns 2022, 2023
  • Irving Fryar: New England Patriots 1991; Miami Dolphins 1993, 1994; Philadelphia Eagles 1996, 1997
  • DeAndre Hopkins: Houston Texans 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019; Arizona Cardinals 2020, Tennessee Titans 2023
  • Brandon Marshall: Denver Broncos 2007, 2008, 2009; Miami Dolphins 2010, 2011; Chicago Bears 2012, 2013; New York Jets 2015
  • Tony Martin: San Diego Chargers 1995, 1996; Atlanta Falcons 1998; Miami Dolphins 1999
  • Randy Moss: Minnesota Vikings 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003; Oakland Raiders 2005; New England Patriots 2007, 2008, 2009
  • Terrell Owens: San Francisco 49ers 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003; Philadelphia Eagles 2004; Dallas Cowboys 2006, 2007, 2008

Cooper also is a former Alabama wide receiver.

The Titans are tied for the worst record in the AFC at 3-13 and enter Sunday’s home game against the Texans on a five-game losing streak.

Tennessee’s most recent victory is a 32-27 victory over Houston on Nov. 24, when Ridley had five receptions for 93 yards.

“Just the way the season went,” Ridley said when asked on Wednesday why getting to 1,000 yards is important to him. “Obviously, when I get these thousand yards, the season still failed because we didn’t win any games. I’m just trying to find some positive in the season for myself, some way I can come back next year and get better from.”

In his first six games with the Titans, Ridley had 12 receptions for 183 yards and one touchdown. In the 10 games since, he has 49 receptions for 758 yards and three touchdowns.

“He’s had a really nice end of the season,” Tennessee offensive coordinator Nick Holz said on Thursday. “He had a couple of really big games in there – Detroit, he had a big game; had a couple other ones – so he’s always going to be the feature point of the passing game. For us right now, he’s our most explosive player on the offensive side, so he’s always sort of No. 1 in the progression for a lot of the things he does. We’re going to get him there.

“The quarterback, everyone, is kind of aware of it, but if you just jam it in there and throw it to him every time, you’re not going to have good results either, so there’s a balance. We are all very well aware that he wants to get it. The kind of season we’ve had, it’d be nice to have a good accomplishment for a guy who’s really handled himself as good as anyone could be going through a losing season and being a new free agent. He’s just as disappointed as we are that we’re not winning, but his attitude is really infectious for the offense.”

The Titans and Texans kick off at noon CST Sunday at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.

Houston has a 9-7 record and will host a first-round game in the NFL playoffs next week as the AFC South champion and the No. 4 seed in the AFC postseason field.
