Miles College hires former Alabama standout Chris Goode as next head football coach
Miles College announced on Friday that former Alabama and NFL defensive back Chris Goode has been hired as the program’s next head football coach.
Goode will replace Sam Shade, who was recently announced as the next head coach at Alabama A&M after three seasons as the program’s head coach.
“We are excited for the future of Miles College football under the direction of Coach Chris Goode and are confident that Coach Goode’s leadership will bring continued success to Miles College football,” Miles College athletics director Fred Watson wrote in a release.
While the announcement marks his first job at the collegiate level, Goode’s coaching experience includes time as the defensive coordinator for the Arena Football League’s Birmingham Steeldogs.
A native of Town Creek and Hazlewood High graduate, he signed with the University of North Alabama as a running back out of high school before a standout career at Alabama.
Before his college career, he was a standout at Hazlewood High. As a senior, he ran for 1,158 yards and led the program to a state title in 1981, also being selected to participate in the 1981 AHSAA All-Star Game.
He was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the 10th round of the 1987 NFL Draft and spent all seven seasons of his career with them.
He played in eight regular-season matchups and a playoff game as a rookie and went on to start 66 of his 96 career NFL games; he totaled seven interceptions and six fumble recoveries across seven seasons.
Goode is the brother of former Alabama players Kerry Goode and Pierre Goode, who also had professional football careers.
Miles College finished 10-3 this season and won the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, falling to eventual Division II runner-up No. 1 Valdosta State in the second round of the Division II playoffs.
