NFL sets lineups for Pro Bowl Games events
Fourteen players from Alabama high schools and colleges are set to participate in the Pro Bowl Games this week.
In September, the NFL eliminated the Pro Bowl game and replaced it with a skills competition for its all-star players. The competition starts on Thursday night with Epic Pro Bowl Dodgeball, Lightning Round, Longest Drive, Precision Passing and the first round of Best Catch and concludes on Sunday with the Best Catch finale, Gridiron Gauntlet, Kick Tac Toe, Move the Chains and three flag-football games.

· Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry (Alabama)
· Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill (West Alabama)

Two other players with Alabama football roots received Pro Bowl selection but will not participate because the Philadelphia Eagles won the NFC championship and are preparing for Super Bowl LVII. The missing selections are guard Landon Dickerson and quarterback Jalen Hurts.
On Wednesday night, the NFL announced the team lineups for the Pro Bowl Games events.
Epic Pro Bowl Dodgeball features six-player teams representing the AFC offense, AFC defense, NFC offense and NFC defense. Participants include Hill and Jacobs on the AFC offense, Fitzpatrick and Humphrey on the AFC defense and Diggs on the NFC defense.
The Lightning Round features 20 players from each conference and three parts. It starts with Splash Catch, during which paired players will try to toss water balloons back and forth across increasing distances. Players who complete all their tosses move to High Stakes, during which they’ll try to catch simulated punts from a JUGS machine to advance to Thrill of the Spill. In the final segment, the players will try to hit targets to dump a bucket of water over the opposing coach’s head. The first to do so wins the three points for his conference.
Lightning Round participants include Williams, Surtain, Jones and Henry for the AFC and Reaves for the NFC.
In Farthest Drive, four players from each conference will get three swings apiece off the tee. The one who hits the golf ball the farthest while staying in the fairway will win the three points.
Longest Drive participants include Mosley and Humphrey for the AFC and Allen, Payne and Smith for the NFC.
Best Catch starts on Thursday night with a video of the four participants showing off their best catches at venues around Las Vegas. A fan vote will determine the two who will compete in Sunday’s final round.
Best Catch participants include Surtain in the AFC.
In Move the Chains, four teams (two from each conference) will seek to pull fastest a weighted wall 10 yards using first-down chains.
Move the Chains participants include Williams and Jones in the AFC and Allen and Payne in the NFC.
Playing in the flag-football games will be Jacobs, Henry, Hill, Mosley, Surtain, Humphrey, Fitzpatrick and Jones for the AFC and Smith, Diggs and Reaves for the NFC. DeMarcus Ware (Auburn High, Troy) is the defensive coordinator for the NFC. Ware is a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023.
The winning conference of each skill competition gets three points. The winning conference from each of the first two flag football games receives six points. The points earned by each conference entering the final flag-football game will be the starting score for that contest, and the team winning the third flag-football game will be the winner of the Pro Bowl Games.
The Pro Bowl Games will be televised by ESPN from 6 to 7:30 p.m. CST Thursday and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Thursday’s events will take place at the Intermountain Performance Center, the Raiders’ headquarters. Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas will be the site for Sunday’s games.
