Will it snow in Alabama next week? What you need to know
The National Weather Service is forecasting the coldest temperatures of the winter to hit Alabama next week.
But could there be a chance for snow during that time?
Forecasters are looking at two chances for precipitation of the frozen kind. Both chances are iffy at best at the moment.
The first chance will arrive early on Sunday and could only affect northeast Alabama. The National Weather Service in Huntsville said some light precipitation could move across north Alabama from west to east just before sunrise on Sunday.
The weather service expects most of the region to be above freezing when this happens, but some light freezing rain could be possible for a few of the typically colder spots in northeast Alabama.
The weather service said “any accumulations of glaze will be less than 0.05 inch, but this may still result in locally slick road conditions (especially bridges and overpasses) where freezing rain occurs.”
Temperatures are expected to warm up a good deal during the day on Sunday as a weather system approaches from the west.
Temperatures will hit the 70s in south Alabama and the 60s in many other spots, though it could remain chilly in parts of northern Alabama. Here are Sunday’s forecast highs:

That weather system is expected to spread rain and storms across Alabama on Sunday.
There could be an isolated strong storm for a small part of west Alabama. The Storm Prediction Center has added a Level 1 out of 5 risk for a small part of west Alabama for Sunday:

A Level 1 risk means isolated severe storms will be possible.
A blast of cold air will arrive behind the front, and the weather service said a snow flurry or two could be possible over the northern part of Alabama overnight Sunday into Monday.
The weather service in Huntsville also noted that flash freezing of any water left on roadways could be possible overnight Sunday into Monday for areas in north Alabama.
Forecasters said Monday will mark the beginning of an extended period of cold weather that will continue through Thursday.

The coldest temperatures will be possible Tuesday through Thursday. During that timeframe, high temperatures are expected to only make it into the 30s and 40s statewide.
Low temperatures are forecast to be in the teens and 20s over that same period — even in south Alabama.
With that depth of cold air in place, attention will turn to the next weather system to affect the state, which could be Thursday into Friday.
“We’ll need to closely monitor our next system Thursday night into Friday as a low pressure center rides along the Gulf Coast to our south,” the weather service in Birmingham said in its Friday morning forecast discussion.
“Synoptically, this can be a pattern favorable for winter weather in central Alabama, especially with the very cold antecedent conditions. For now, uncertainty is still very high in how the system evolves and tracks, so details are limited in regards to any potential impacts.”
The weather service in Mobile also noted the possibility, saying “We will have to keep a close eye out for the potential of the Gulf low … to bring precipitation to our area just beyond the extended period (Thursday night into Friday, and possibly into Saturday of next week). Both the EURO and the GFS indicate this as a possibility, and given that overnight lows look to still be in the 20s for most locations Thursday night (and Friday night) and around 30 at the coast, this could be in the form of wintry precipitation. We will be getting a better idea with regard to this potential.”
