Ranking the top 10 moments from the 2024 Alabama football season
Alabama football didn’t end the year well.
The Crimson Tide fell short of making the College Football Playoff and lost to an understaffed Michigan team in the ReliaQuest Bowl. That leaves a bitter taste to end the 2024 season.
How Alabama fell short will be the main narrative of Kalen DeBoer’s first season leading the Crimson Tide, but there were good moments. Plenty of them, actually.
With the 2024 season now concluded, here’s our ranking of the top 10 moments for Alabama from the season.
10. USF fourth quarter
Let’s look past the fact this game was 14-13 Alabama heading into the fourth quarter.
Instead, turn your attention to the final frame of the game. The Crimson Tide cruised after playing less-than-ideal football most of the day.
Kobe Prentice started the fourth quarter with a 16-yard receiving touchdown. Fast forward to the final six minutes, and Alabama scored three touchdowns over that span. First a 43-yard pass to Ryan Williams, then a 50-yard run from Jam Miller, and Justice Haynes closed things out with a 29-yard score.
As forgettable as the first three quarters were, Alabama imposed its will in a memorable fourth quarter.
9. ‘Jump Around’ at Wisconsin
Alabama took the Badgers’ tradition and used it to celebrate as the Crimson Tide routed Wisconsin on the road.
When House of Pain’s “Jump Around” played between the third and fourth quarter per the Camp Randall tradition, Alabama held a 35-10 lead. Jalen Milroe ran twice for scores, Jam Miller added another, and both Ryan Williams and Germie Bernard caught touchdowns.
So when “Jump Around” played, Crimson Tide players jumped around, too. Alabama went on to win 42-10.
8. Domani Jackson INT vs. South Carolina
The Gamecocks recovered an onside kick in the final minutes, giving them one last shot to knock off Alabama at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
South Carolina had just drawn within 27-25 with 43 seconds left. Then the onside kick put the Gamecocks on the Alabama 49-yard line.
Three plays later, Jackson ended the game.
The junior cornerback snagged an interception near the end zone then returned it 38 yards. Game over. Alabama secured the win over what turned out to be a good South Carolina team.
7. OC Nick Sheridan leaves booth early vs. LSU
Alabama’s offensive coordinator got to take a victory lap of sorts.
The Crimson Tide crushed LSU, particularly on offense with 42 points, so Sheridan had a chance to go down to the sideline before the game ended. He called plays in 2024 from the booth.
Sheridan’s early walk to join the Crimson Tide players and coaches included smiles, hugs and more.
Consider this the symbolic moment of how the day went for Alabama on the road against the Tigers. Milroe ran for four touchdowns himself, and the offense accounted for six rushing touchdowns total to knock LSU out of College Football Playoff contention.
6. Jalen Milroe runs past Demarcus Riddick in Iron Bowl
Here’s this year’s signature play in the Iron Bowl. It wasn’t fourth-and-31, but it was still cinema.
Auburn freshman linebacker Demarcus Riddick decided in the week preceding his first matchup against Alabama that he would talk a big game. That included saying “he’s not faster than me” about Milroe.
Turns out, that’s not true.
Fast forward to Saturday, and Milroe ran past Riddick for a touchdown.
5. Goal-line stand vs. Missouri
Alabama was about to surrender the shutout.
Missouri sat on the 1-yard line in the final minutes of the game. Fourth-and-goal. Then the Alabama defense stuffed Marcus Carroll. Turnover on downs. Shutout preserved.
The Crimson Tide was going to win the game either way, but Alabama got the signature defensive victory of the season by saving the shutout with this goal-line stand.
4. Zabien Brown INT vs. Georgia
The Alabama defense needed to get a stop to redeem itself for second-half struggles.
Georgia had mounted the second-half comeback and looked to add one more touchdown. Ryan Williams scored a late touchdown to take back the lead (more on that soon), but the game wasn’t over.
Then, before Georgia quarterback Carson Beck could play hero, freshman cornerback Zabien Brown stole the ball one last time.
Brown’s interception preserved Alabama’s signature victory of the season.
3. Saban Field dedication
During the USF game, Alabama officially dedicated the field at Bryant-Denny Stadium to Nick Saban after he retired in January after 17 seasons. Six national championships over that span earned him G.O.A.T. status and cemented his legend in Tuscaloosa.
The day began with a pregame ceremony outside the stadium where Saban and others spoke as the new signage for “Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium” was unveiled. Then at halftime, Saban walked through the tunnel while “Thunderstruck” played to go onto the field where Alabama honored him with a halftime ceremony.
It’s not every day you get to name your field after a coach as successful and impactful as Saban. So, it’s without question a top 10 moment of the season.
2. First half vs. Georgia
Saban who?
The first half of the primetime matchup against the Bulldogs might have been the peak of the season. Alabama looked unstoppable and made Georgia look mediocre and started to make it look like things might not be so bad for the Crimson Tide in the post-Saban era.
The Crimson Tide scored three touchdowns in the first quarter alone. By halftime, Alabama grabbed a 30-7 lead over then-No. 2 Georgia.
The Crimson Tide dominated a quality Bulldogs team over the first two frames. Milroe looked on a path to win the Heisman Trophy and Alabama looked destined to win the national championship. It was that impressive of a half.
Alabama couldn’t continue that dominant first-half effort the rest of the game, and frankly, much of the rest of the season. But this first half was unforgettable.
1. Ryan Williams touchdown vs. Georgia
The Bulldogs had just completed the improbable second-half comeback. Or so they thought.
Georgia, originally down 23, fought back to take a 34-33 lead with under three minutes to go.
Then Ryan Williams scored the next play, making an acrobatic catch. 75 yards. Lead snatched right back. He made the catch that proved to be the game winner.
Consider it the play of the season. Not bad for a 17-year-old freshman.
