State doubles size of 2023 recruiting class, adds 14

Jacksonville State literally doubled its 2023 recruiting class on Wednesday, adding 14 new players after signing 14 in December.

As the Gamecocks prepare to move up to the FBS level and join Conference USA under second-year coach Rich Rodriguez, they officially added 11 high school signees and three transfers who joined the team in January. The three transfers are wide receiver Jamarye Joiner (Arizona), safety Austin Ambush (Maine) and running back J’Wan Evans (College of San Mateo).

“We added 14 guys to the program and will also add 10 or 12 preferred walk-ons that are really good players,” Rodriguez said. “So I thought our staff did a really good job. There’s obviously a lot of transition going on with the move up to FBS and moving to a new conference. And we’re selling the new facility that is going to get started here pretty soon, so there is a lot going on.”

The Gamecocks added four offensive linemen, including three from inside the state: Kaiden Arnold (Escambia County), Marvin Lee (Sparkman) and Cameron Griffin (Pinson Valley). Rounding out the group is Bryce Causey of Mount de Salles Academy in Macon, Ga.

Quarterback Cam Vaughn (Temple, Ga.) joins December signees Caden Creel of Fairhope and Earl Woods of Hueytown. The Gamecocks also signed wide receiver Jaylen Williams (Orlando, Fla.).

On the defensive side of the ball, Jacksonville State signed cornerback Geimer Latimer (Fairburn, Ga.), safeties Nehemiah Pgouda (Douglasville, Ga.) and Zechariah Poyser (Wildwood, Fla.) and edge rushers Tae Floyd (Ocala, Fla.) and Shane Payton Hodges (New Orleans).
