Will Jalen Hurts be back for the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday?

After sustaining a concussion during a 36-33 loss to the Washington Commanders on Dec. 22, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts missed a 41-7 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said “we’ll see as the week progresses” when asked on Wednesday if Hurts would be ready to return in Philadelphia’s regular-season finale against the New York Giants.

But if it’s any indication, Sirianni said Philadelphia would “rest some guys” on Sunday, including running back Saquon Barkley, who is uninjured and 101 rushing yards from breaking the NFL’s 40-year-old single-season record held by Eric Dickerson.

“Obviously, it’s a very special record that’s been standing for a very long time by a great player,” Sirianni said. “It’s a team record. It’s a team record that everybody’s involved in, so you take, you weigh in all those things. But at the end of the day, you just try to do what’s best for the team.”

Hurts did not practice on Wednesday as the former Alabama QB remains in the NFL’s return-to-participation protocol, the league’s path back to the field for players who have sustained head injuries.

“I don’t think I talk about the protocol,” Sirianni said on Wednesday when asked for an update on Hurts’ progress. “The protocol is what it is. …

“We listen to the doctors. We follow the doctors’ advice in this. And they do this by design, again, so the people that are involved in the concussion protocol are the ones that are handling those things. And, again, we just take it day-by-day and see where they are each and every day.”

The Eagles will be the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs and start the postseason with a first-round home game regardless of the outcome of their Sunday contest against the Giants.

“Our guys that are not playing in the game will use this as an opportunity to rest their bodies and to help their teammate get better,” Sirianni said. “And the guys that are playing, again, some of them will be in a reserve role. Some of them will play more than they have in the past. Some of them will play less than they have in the past. So everybody’s in a little bit different scenario and everybody was thought of individually. And it’s not: Hey, here’s the book on this. Right? Everybody was thought through. Each and every person was thought through individually.”

The Eagles and Giants square off at noon CST Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Kenny Pickett, Hurts’ backup and the Eagles’ starter against the Cowboys, didn’t practice on Wednesday because of a rib injury that caused him to leave Sunday’s game.

Tanner McKee finished the contest at quarterback for Philadelphia. The Eagles also have quarterback Ian Book, who joined the team on Dec. 26.
