New Orleans attack: When will the Sugar Bowl be played?

The CFP quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans between Georgia and Notre Dame has been postponed until Thursday after a truck plowed into a New Year’s crowd early Wednesday, killing at least 15 people.

The College Football Playoff game, originally scheduled for Wednesday night at the Superdome, has been pushed back 24 hours to Thursday night.

“We have been in consultation with ESPN, the College Football Playoffs, the Southeastern Conference, the University of Georgia, with Notre Dame,” Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley said. “All parties agreed it’s in the best interest of everybody and public safety that we postpone the game for 24 hours.”

The exact time and broadcast information has yet to be announced. It is assumed ESPN will broadcast the game in prime time. However, the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl between Ole Miss and Duke is scheduled for ESPN on Thursday night at 6:30.

The Superdome was on lockdown for security sweeps on Wednesday morning, when people with offices in the Superdome — including officials with the Sugar Bowl and Sun Belt Conference — were told not to come into work.

However, ESPN’s Laura Rutledge reported Wednesday the Superdome has been “deemed safe” as she reported from the facility.

Both the Georgia and Notre Dame teams, she reported, are locked down in the team hotel for the remainder of the day.

A statement from the University of Georgia Athletic Association said that “all team personnel and members of the official team travel party have been accounted for.”

New Orleans City Council President Helena Moreno told WDSU-TV: “What you’ll see today for the Sugar Bowl, which will go on, is that the perimeter for security around the Superdome has been extended to be a larger zone.”

“So expect obviously extra security. There are more police officers who are coming in.”
