Alabama hit with unusual ‘sideline interference’ penalty in ReliaQuest Bowl vs. Michigan

Alabama incurred an unusual penalty during the third quarter of Tuesday’s ReliaQuest Bowl vs. Michigan.

After James Smith sacked Michigan quarterback Davis Warren for a 13-yard loss on third down, the Crimson Tide was hit with a 15-yard flag for “sideline interference.” As ESPN rules analyst Matt Austin noted, a member of the Alabama coaching staff ran over an official on the sideline while running to celebrate the big play.

Adding to the confusion, the penalty was announced and marked off after the ESPN broadcast had gone to a commercial break. Here’s (admittedly grainy) video:

Fortunately for Alabama, Michigan went three and out and punted on the subsequent series. The Wolverines led 16-10 at the time.
