Alabama weekend tornado count likely to climb

The National Weather Service has confirmed three tornado tracks from a round of severe storms on Saturday into Sunday.

That number is likely to go up today.

The weather service office in Birmingham will be back out in the field today looking at storm damage in Lowndes, Montgomery, Macon, Shelby and St. Clair counties.

The weather service office in Mobile will also cover a lot of ground. Three survey teams will track damage through parts of Choctaw, Escambia, Conch, Monroe, Butler and Baldwin counties.

Multiple tornado warnings were issued from Saturday night into early Sunday morning as a line of severe storms tracked across the state.

The weather service will look at the damage those storms left behind and determine if it was caused by a tornado or straight-line winds. If a tornado is confirmed it will be given a preliminary rating using the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which ranges from EF0 to EF5.

The weather service in Huntsville on Sunday confirmed that an EF1 tornado with 100 mph winds tracked through downtown Athens in Limestone County. Another EF1 tornado has also been confirmed in Lamar County. The third tornado that has been confirmed from the weekend was an EF0 in Mobile County.

The weather service in Mobile also confirmed another tornado from a round of storms on Friday in southwest Alabama. That tornado was an EF1.

None of the confirmed tornadoes mentioned above caused any deaths or injuries.

The weather service said updates on today’s storm surveys will be released when possible, but since teams have a lot of ground to cover those updates may not come until later tonight.

Before this weekend Alabama had only confirmed 42 tornadoes through all of 2024, which is below average.
