Auburn football’s best offensive recruit signs with 2023 class
Auburn’s future running back became official on Wednesday. Jeremiah Cobb, the Tigers’ top offensive recruit in the class of 2023, signed his national letter of intent.
All 21 of Auburn’s high school commitments have now signed, finalizing a group ranked 17th overall on the 247Sports Composite. While new head coach Hugh Freeze was active in late December by adding transfers and flipping others, the retention of Cobb in the class, even at its leanest moments, provided the Tigers another offseason win.
“He’s just so versatile,” Johnson told AL.com’s Ben Thomas when Cobb committed last July. “You can throw it to him out of the backfield. He’s a 3-down back. You can do so many different things with him. You can play him in the kicking game, as a punt returner. You can even snap it to him and let him throw it.”
Cobb scored 90 touchdowns as a high schooler for Montgomery Catholic and ran for 6,567 rushing yards. He was a focal point of the Knights’ offense for years, earning an ASWA all-state honor thrice Cobb helped lead a run to the AHSAA Class 3A state championship in 2020.
His signature was delayed due to school rules, head coach Kirk Johnson confirmed on Jan. 20. Catholic doesn’t let students graduate in the winter, so Cobb and his teammates signed their NLIs together in the school’s gymnasium. Three-star tight end Josh Palmer signed with Vanderbilt at the event.
Cobb will join USF transfer Brian Battie in the backfield next season along with Jarquez Hunter and Damari Alston. Cobb’s addition continued an active day for Auburn athletics. Freeze signed his first 2025 commit with defensive lineman Malik Autry from Opelika and 2024 defensive back Jayden Lewis from Anniston. Bruce Pearl also earned a verbal commitment from a five-star point guard to the men’s basketball program.
“(Cadillac Williams) called me when he got retained and told me he was staying and everything was good,” Cobb said in December. “That really excited me. I’m excited to have a coach who can make me a better back.”
