Strong storms possible Friday and Saturday in Alabama

Alabama’s so-called “secondary” severe weather season has been on the quiet side, but that could be about to change this weekend.

A series of disturbances could generate strong to severe storms in west Alabama on Friday. A wider area in Alabama faces the possibility of strong storms on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

Tornadoes, damaging winds and heavy rain will all be possible with the strongest storms.

FRIDAY

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has added a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather for a part of west Alabama on Friday:

A Level 1 risk means that isolated severe storms will be possible.

The National Weather Service in Mobile said the threat for severe storms on Friday is not a sure thing. However, if storms do develop they would likely affect southern Alabama starting on Friday afternoon.

Forecasters said rain could then linger into the late night hours.

SATURDAY

On Saturday a small area in west Alabama will have a Level 2 severe weather risk. And most of the rest of the state will have a Level 1 risk (see the forecast for Saturday at the top of this post).

A Level 2 risk means that scattered severe storms will be possible.

The weather service expects a cold front to approach the state on Saturday, and storms could develop ahead of it.

The best time for storms will be on Saturday afternoon into the evening hours, according to the weather service.

Forecasters said “a couple tornadoes, damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter size hail” will all be possible with the strongest storms.

Storms on Saturday aren’t a sure thing, forecasters noted. Rain will be possible earlier in the day on Saturday, which could prevent conditions from being more favorable for storms.

SUNDAY AND BEYOND

The weather service expects drier and calmer weather to take over starting on Sunday from west to east in Alabama.

Milder temperatures are also expected to continue on Sunday.

However, an unsettled weather pattern will continue, with the next chance for rain arriving on Tuesday.
