Mobile fire displaces families on Christmas; person and pets rescued

Firefighters rescued a person in a wheelchair, a dog and two cats from a fire in an apartment building in Mobile that displaced six families on Christmas morning.

Rescuers were dispatched at 7:19 a.m. Wednesday and arrived to a building engulfed in smoke which could be seen in second-floor apartments.

“Firefighters made entry into the building to extinguish the fire. Primary and secondary searches to look for anyone inside were all clear of victims,” The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department said in a press release Wednesday.

Six apartments were significantly damaged, displacing eleven people from six families, the department said.

After extinguishing the fire, crews salvaged what belongings they could. They stayed on scene to make sure the fire was out, and investigators did an investigation and determined the fire was an accident.

The Red Cross is helping the individuals who were displaced. No injuries were reported.
