Former Troy receiver Devonte Ross headed to Big Ten school
Former Troy wide receiver Devonte Ross is headed to Penn State, he announced on Tuesday.
A redshirt sophomore with two seasons of eligibility remaining, Ross was a first-team All-Sun Belt Conference pick as both a wide receiver and all-purpose back in 2024, and a second-team selection as a return specialist. He led the Sun Belt in touchdown receptions (11) and all-purpose yards (1,445) and ranked second in receptions (76) and yards (1,043), while averaging 14 yards per punt return — including a 77-yard touchdown vs. Iowa.
Ross announced his commitment via Instagram:
A Cartersville, Ga., native, Ross excelled for a Troy team that went 4-8 in 2024 and had quarterback injury issues all year. The Trojans started three different players behind center, with No. 1 QB Goose Crowder suffering a season-ending injury in September.
This is the third straight year Troy has lost its top pass-catcher to the transfer portal, after Tez Johnson (Oregon) in 2022 and Jabre Barber (Texas A&M) in 2023. In addition, standout receiver Chris Lewis — who led the Sun Belt in touchdown catches in 2023 — did not play this past season after undergoing treatment for bone cancer.
Ross is one of two starters from the 2024 Troy team who have entered the portal in this cycle, along with safety Ian Conerly-Goodly. Reserve defensive backs Cecil Powell and Darrell Starling, among others, are also in the portal.
