NFL Week 17: Philadelphia Eagles’ DeVonta Smith aims to put dropped pass behind him
Wide receiver DeVonta Smith’s focus is on what’s ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles. But the former Alabama All-American is having to answer questions about what he’d prefer to leave behind.
“That game’s over with,” Smith said. “Ain’t nothing I can do about it now.”
The Eagles’ 10-game winning streak ended with a 36-33 loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday.
Leading 30-28, Philadelphia looked as though it had extended its winning streak when former West Limestone High School standout Reed Blankenship intercepted Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels and put the Eagles at the Washington 27-yard line with 2:53 to play with a 28-yard return.
After Philadelphia snapped two plays, the Commanders used their second timeout. On third-and-5, quarterback Kenny Pickett found Smith open over the middle for first-down yardage. But Smith dropped the football, stopping the clock at 2:02.
A field goal increased the Eagles’ lead to five points, but left Washington 1:58 for a comeback. The Commanders scored a touchdown with six seconds left.
“I just dropped the ball,” Smith said. “I ain’t going to beat myself up over it. It’s life, part of the game. I mean, I made all those tough catches today, and then the easiest one I had, I dropped. It is what it is. Ain’t nobody else’s fault but mine. …
“I was calling for it, and when they put it in my hands, I got to make the (expletive) play.”
Philadelphia entered Sunday with a 12-2 record, the same as the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings, with one of those teams guaranteed to lose at least once because they meet on the final Sunday of the regular season.
But Sunday’s loss has likely taken the Eagles out of the race for the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs and the accompanying first-round bye. The No. 2 seed and a first-round home game against the worst of the three wild-card teams appears more probable now – and that wild-card team right now is the Commanders, if Philadelphia maintains its two-game lead on Washington at the top of the NFC East for the final two weeks of the season.
The Eagles enter the closing stretch with uncertainty at quarterback. Jalen Hurts left Sunday’s game in the second quarter to be evaluated for a concussion. He did not return, and on Monday, Philadelphia coach Nick Sirianni said the former Alabama QB was in the concussion protocol.

“No matter who’s in at quarterback,” Smith said, “we all have to go out there and execute at a high level, so when (Pickett) came in, it didn’t change our process as receivers. We still got to go out there and win on our routes. …
“We’re professionals. We’re expected to go out there and get it done no matter what the circumstances are.”
Pickett had played 28 snaps for the Eagles before Sunday. But he made 24 starts for the Pittsburgh Steelers across the previous two seasons.
“He played good,” Smith said. “I think he settled in well. I think he made the right reads and things like that. It’s unfortunate I didn’t make the last play.”
Philadelphia closes the regular season with two home games against NFC East rivals. The Dallas Cowboys come to Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday and the New York Giants visit on Jan. 5. If things go right for Smith and the Eagles, they can look ahead to at least four straight home games on the road to Super Bowl LIX.
The Alabama Games of the Week are the Baltimore Ravens-Houston Texans contest on Wednesday and the Miami Dolphins-Cleveland Browns contest on Sunday. Eleven players from Alabama high schools and colleges are on the teams’ active rosters in each game.
