Man charged with murder in connection with I-65 shooting that left 28-year-old dead in Mobile

A suspect was arrested Monday on murder and other charges in connection with a shooting earlier this month on I-65 in Mobile, police said.

Derrell Maye, 30, was booked into Mobile County Metro Jail on charges of murder, attempted murder, reckless endangerment, discharging a gun into an occupied vehicle, trafficking synthetic marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, jail records showed.

Maye’s charges stem from the Dec. 8 homicide on I-65 southbound near Airport Boulevard that left 28-year-old Monterio Harris dead.

A wounded Harris was taken via private vehicle to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police learned Harris was a passenger in the vehicle when another vehicle approached and opened fire, striking the vehicle several times.

A portion of I-65 was shut down during the initial investigation.

Maye was taken into custody Monday afternoon near Old Shell Road and Cody Road, police said.

Further information was unavailable.
