Ex-Alabama football defender lands at Michigan

Michigan has landed an Alabama football player’s commitment fewer than two weeks before the Wolverines and Crimson Tide face each other in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

Alabama defensive lineman Damon Payne is transferring to Michigan, per multiple reports Wednesday.

Payne leaves Alabama after three seasons with Alabama. Payne worked as a rotational player in all 12 games on the defense this season, tallying 288 snaps per Pro Football Focus.

Payne is a former five-star prospect, per the 247Sports Composite. He was the No. 24 overall player in the 2021 recruiting class.

The transfer portal has been open for about a week and will remain open for about two more weeks.

Alabama secured its first commitment from the portal in Kelby Collins on Tuesday night. The former Florida defender will play Bandit in Kane Wommack’s defense.
