Auburn DE Amaris Williams changes plans, will return in 2025
Auburn football defensive end Amaris Williams will return to Auburn in 2025, he told On3 on Tuesday.
Williams also reposted the On3 announcement on X (formerly Twitter) Tuesday evening.
A former five-star prospect, Williams filed the necessary paperwork to enter the transfer portal on Monday and posted On3’s announcement of his plans to enter the portal on his Instagram story.
During his freshman season in 2024, Williams tallied six tackles, one and a half tackles for loss and half a sack in 10 games. In Auburn’s 2024 recruiting class, he was the second-highest rated prospect behind Cam Coleman.
With Williams’ return, Auburn retains a promising, young pass rusher that can likely play either the Buck linebacker or traditional defensive end role.
Auburn lost its starting Buck linebacker, Jalen McLeod, following the 2024 season, and Williams could be a contributor at that position in 2025 along with Keyron Crawford, Jamonta Waller and Joe Phillips as returners.
The transfer portal will remain open until Dec. 28 and a player’s entrance into the transfer portal does not prevent them from returning to their original school.
