Grandfather charged with failing to report 1-year-old missing months before wreck killed father, sister

A 1-year-old Alabama boy discovered missing after a wreck killed his father and 2-year-old sister, and critically injured his mother, was possibly missing for months.

The boy’s grandfather, 55-year-old John Elton Bailey, is charged with failure to report a missing child, according to court records.

Charging documents against Bailey say he committed the alleged crime on Sept. 10 in Fayette County.

The criminal complaint states Bailey “failed to report a missing child by delaying to make or failing to cause to be made the report with willful and reckless disregard for the safety of the child and the child suffered serious bodily harm or death, to wit: physical injuries to the child and the child was removed from the home and taken to an unknown location and no report was made by any resident of the home.”

Bailey was arrested Dec. 11 and remains held in the Fayette County Jail on $100,000 bond.

His attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency on Tuesday issued a missing alert for Kahleb. The alert said Kahleb was last seen Sept. 4.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office on Monday issued a press release saying the 1-year-old boy, Kahleb Rowan Collins, had been missing since the Dec. 8 single-vehicle wreck that killed his father, 40-year-old Steven Bradley “Brad” Collins, and sister, 2-year-old Ryleigh Collins.

Kahleb’s mother, 22-year-old Wendy “Pam” Bailey, remains in critical condition at UAB Hospital.

The wreck happened at 10:24 a.m. that Sunday on Fayette County 73 near Morris Cemetery Road, about two miles south of Glen Allen.

ALEA Senior Trooper Brandon Bailey said the 2-year-old girl was a passenger in a Toyota Tacoma that left the road and hit a tree.

Ryleigh was unrestrained and pronounced dead on the scene.

Brad Collins died the following day.

Authorities said the parents were not using their seat belts at the time of the crash.

John Bailey is Wendy Bailey’s father and lived with the family in Winfield.

Brad Collins on Nov. 6 posted this on Facebook: “Our son is not doing well. He is not growing has major back issues. His organs are growing but not his body. He has to have surgery at some point. Keep him in your prayers. Been rough and just seems going to be a long rough road ahead of us.”

Fayette County sheriff’s officials have not responded to a request for comment.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information on Kahleb’s whereabouts was asked to call the sheriff’s office at 205-932-3205 and ask to speak to Investigator Brandon Collins.
