Man charged with capital murder in Birmingham shooting was suspect in teen’s 2017 homicide

A 24-year-old man is charged with capital murder in the Saturday shooting death of a 48-year-old man at a Birmingham walking trail at a busy intersection on the city’s west side.

Jhontaye Dior Cobb killed Randolph Taylor Jr. during a robbery, according to Birmingham police.

This is the second capital murder charge for the suspect.

Cobb was one of two teens charged in 2017 with capital murder in the slaying of a 15-year-old Jackson-Olin High School student, but those charges were ultimately dismissed.

Cobb in 2019 pleaded guilty to attempted murder in a separate case and was sentenced to serve two years of a 20-year sentence, court records show.

He pleaded guilty in October to attempting to elude, receiving stolen property and certain persons forbidden to possess a firearm.

Saturday’s shooting happened just before 12:30 p.m. at the West End Walking Trail on Cotton Avenue S.W.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said officers responding to the walking trail after Shot Spotter, the city’s gunfire detection system, indicated shots fired in that area.

While they were en route, they were notified that someone had been hit.

Taylor was found in the center of the walking trail next to a brick landscaping wall. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.

Birmingham Police Department’s patrol officers, Real Time Crime Center, and numerous community members helped BPD Homicide detectives quickly identify a suspect, Fitzgerald said.

Community members assisted investigators on the scene and by calling in tips.

Cobb was taken into custody Sunday at a Fairfield home by the police department’s Crime Reduction Team and Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies.

He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 9:13 p.m. Monday and remains held without bond.
