Bernabe Roman, 47, was arrested this Sunday by the Athens Police Department for the Dec. 25, 1997, murder of Jose Salinas Gomez.

The murder occurred on the 1500 block of Wheeler Street in Athens, according to a report from WAAY 31.

Efforts to reach Athens police were not immediately successful.

A Limestone County Grand Jury indictment warrant was issued for Roman’s arrest in February 1998.

On Sunday, Athens Police were assisting the ICE – Enforcement and Removal Division – Fugitive Operation Team when they received information about Roman’s whereabouts.

A search warrant was quickly obtained for Roman’s residence in the 24000 block of Bain Road in Athens.

Both agencies, along with the Athens High-risk Entry & Apprehension Team, executed the warrant and were able to take Roman into custody following a brief “hold and callout.”

This is a police method where officers secure the area around a location and ask the people inside to come out, according to Police Magazine.

Roman is currently being held in the Limestone County jail with a bond of $75,000.
